Oy – We Need More Women in Government
Last week we reported an epidemic of anti-choice legislation being spurred by the scientifically-dubious-at-best “fetal pain” theory. Late last week, a similar abortion ban failed in the Arkansas House. However, bans in Minnesota, Idaho, and Missouri trudged forward. Just yesterday, South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard signed legislation requiring a woman to wait a staggering 3 days after meeting with her doctor to have an abortion – the longest waiting period in the country. These attacks on women underscore why we need more pro-choice women in government at every level and in every state. That’s why WCF is…

Calling All Recruits!
Last year, we saw the first backslide in women’s representation in Congress in over 30 years. This year, women are facing unprecedented attacks on their reproductive health choices. It’s no coincidence. To fight back against the war on women, WCF is issuing an urgent national draft to recruit pro-choice women candidates. Join the effort and share the names of pro-choice women candidates you know who are running right now.

Sharron Angle-ing For House Seat
At least no one can call her a quitter. Former U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle of Nevada has announced she will be running for the U.S. House of Representatives. She will likely face a crowded primary on the GOP side for the seat Republican Rep. Heller (NV-02) is leaving to pursue the Senate seat being vacated by Senator Ensign.

Give ‘em Hell, Harry
Speaking of Nevada, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says “hell no” to any budget agreement that cuts funding from Planned Parenthood.

Mind the Gap
Less than a third of student presidents at the top 50 colleges in the U.S. are women. Given the disgusting attacks on female student leaders this year, the gender gap isn’t particularly surprising – although it certainly is downright disturbing. Luckily, there are programs like Elect Her working to resolve this disparity, because gaining leadership experience early on gives a woman the confidence to realize She Should Run later in her career.

X v. X: It Just Got Interesting!
After weeks of speculation, Erie County Clerk Kathy Hochul is officially the Democrat nominee in the race to fill former Rep. Chris Lee’s seat in NY-26. This announcement formally sets the stage for a WCF favorite: an election frontlined by women.

Secretary Clinton: Say It Ain’t So!
In perhaps the most disappointing read this week, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton gave a string of “no’s” in response to questions about her future in public office. However, there are rumors the Secretary will continue to advocate on behalf of women and children after leaving public office. We can only hope.

Have You Had An Abortion? Did You Keep Your Receipt?
One of the provisions of the rabidly anti-choice “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” would force survivors of sexual assault to provide “contemporary written documentation” for abortions resulting from rape or incest – or face an audit by the IRS.

Celebrating Lady Leaders in Vermont
Vermont Public Radio came closer to being MsRep’s favorite public radio station this week by featuring a history of women in politics in Vermont. We here at WCF especially appreciated the focus on former Vermont Governor Madeleine Kunin, the first woman in U.S. history to be elected governor three times, a staunch supporter of women in politics, and yes – as if you had to ask – a WCF endorsee. During her tenure as governor, Kunin insisted that no appointments be made unless women were on the nominee list. As in elected positions, women are also woefully underrepresented in appointed positions. Check out Appoint Her to learn about what the WCF Foundation is doing to fix that disparity.

Women Abroad: Revolutionary Run-down
CNN takes a country by country look at what the protests in the Middle East could mean for women’s rights – and the conclusion isn’t as bright as you might expect:

“Most experts agree that the anti-government protests are, first and foremost, protests against the political and economic status quo. Arab women have been protesting against political regimes for decades, so their role in the recent protests – while seemingly revolutionary – isn’t all that new and doesn’t symbolize a victory for women’s rights.”

Here’s to sincerely hoping more women will serve in the transition governments sprouting around the globe. As we know, when women don’t have a voice, whole societies suffer.
